Incident Overview

A Robinson R44 helicopter crashed shortly after taking off from Sandown Airport. The aircraft was airborne for approximately seven minutes before coming down near Shanklin Road, between Shanklin and Whiteley Bank.

Emergency Response

Emergency services, including Hampshire & Isle of Wight Air Ambulance, Coastguard Rescue 175 from Lee-on-Solent, and fire crews from Shanklin, Ventnor, and Newport, responded promptly to the scene. The A3020 Shanklin Road was closed to facilitate the response.

A witness reported seeing the helicopter spiraling before it crashed into a hedge. She observed four individuals on board and noted that the airbags appeared to have been activated.

Three people were killed in the crash. A fourth person survived but remains in critical condition. The Air Accident Investigation Branch has been informed and is expected to attend the scene to examine the debris field.
