Wow, that was a real landslide, wasn’t it? So Zack Polanski has nailed that Green Party leadership election with 20,411 votes, thrashing his opposition’s 3,705. The former actor and hypnotherapist has become the party’s first sole leader in its history as the party after several years of having had co-leaders.
What makes this story fascinating is how different Polanski’s background is from your a typical politician. This guy was playing to the galleries as an actor before he ever campaigned for climate. Not exactly the usual route to party leadership, is it?
From Stage to Politics
When politics beckoned, Polanski was working as an actor and hypnotherapist. He’s had different jobs, doing youth support work, mental health counselling, and various roles in hospitality. He’s performed in settings ranging from prisons to schools to nightclubs. So much for getting a real taste of real life.
The hypnotherapy work did get him into hot water in 2013 when he clashed with a Sun reporter discussing dodgy claims about breast enlargement. He has since apologised for that, but it’s an example of how his unconventional background sometimes causes a stir.
The Leadership Victory
The result yesterday saw Polanski vow to build “a country where no one is left behind.” He won more than 80% of the votes, obliterating the challenge from former co-leader Adrian Ramsay and first-time MP Ellie Chowns, who stood on a joint ticket.
The Greens have scored a brilliant victory right on time. They have just achieved their best-ever general election result and now they have somebody to lead them who actually understands grassroots campaigning as well as media presentation; well, he was once an actor, after all.
The Eco-Populist Approach
Polanski is being labelled an “eco-populist firebrand,” which is his way of making environmental issues connect with ordinary people’s daily struggles. He’s also not shy about borrowing from other populist politicians; he went so far as to mention Nigel Farage as someone to learn from when it comes to communication.
That may sound odd, but it’s actually very clever politics. The Greens have long been regarded as a middle-class party that fails to address the concerns of working people. Polanski’s trying to change that.
What Makes Him Different
Polanski is a gay Jew, born in Salford and working as a property guardian in London. He knows firsthand what it’s like to struggle with housing costs and work multiple jobs to make ends meet. This isn’t someone who’s lived in an ivory tower.
He also has the right political credentials, thanks to his experience in the London Assembly since 2021. He is chairman of the Environment Committee and has taken on issues related to air pollution and water quality. So he’s not all talk; he’s got the experience to back up what he says.

The Road Ahead
Political insiders suggest that the Green Party has “finally picked a side” in this leadership election and has chosen a radical path, rather than trying to bridge the gap between centrist and socialist forces within the party.
Whether Polanski can parley his unconventional upbringing and populist style into victory remains to be determined. True or not, one thing’s for sure: British politics has just become a lot more interesting with this former actor as the head of one of the fastest-growing political parties in the country.”
From community theatre to party leader, it’s been quite a journey for this unconventional politician.
