British wages have barely moved since 2008, and that’s the heart of it. Australia has a higher wage floor, 12% pension paid on top of your salary, and a mining boom behind it. Median full-time pay there runs about 20% ahead of ours, and the gap grows in nursing, teaching and medicine.
Nobody moves 10,000 miles for the weather. Ask anyone who has gone and the same question comes up: why are UK salaries so low compared to Australia? It’s flat productivity, a stingier wage floor and a very different pension system. The shopping bill there tempers the excitement, mind.
- Australia’s minimum wage is A$26.44 an hour from July 2026. Ours is £12.71.

Job by Job: Where the Gap Bites Hardest
Averages hide a lot. Here are some roles, based on 2024 data from the removals firm White & Company.

Check-a-Salary puts UK IT at £43,726, legal at £39,210, marketing at £38,728, engineering at £36,280 and construction at £30,724.
Indeed’s Australian figures: mining and energy at A$134,954, engineering at A$113,667, construction at A$111,292, IT at A$97,733, legal at A$94,841 and HR at A$85,729. Nurses’ average there is A$83,722 against £36,430 here, 29% more; teachers’ average is A$88,360 against £34,618, a 40% gap. Entry level starts at A$77,154 for nurses and A$74,293 for teachers.
New World Immigration reckons Victoria alone needs 1,300 extra teachers a year, and Health Workforce Australia flagged an 85,000 nurse shortfall.

Why are UK Salaries so Low Compared to Australia’s?
As per Darren Janathon, there are five reasons, and only one is the exchange rate.
Britain Stopped Getting More Productive
The Resolution Foundation has tracked 15 years of relative decline, with UK productivity growing at half the pace of other rich economies. It reckons the average worker is £10,700 a year worse off than the old trend implied. Wages can’t climb if output doesn’t.
Australia Sets its Wage Floor Differently
The Fair Work Commission reviews minimum pay every year and gave nearly three million workers a 4.75% rise in 2026. Modern awards stack penalty rates on evenings, weekends and overtime. Our Low Pay Commission recommended 4.1% for April 2026, but Britain has no legal overtime premium.
Pensions and Hours Are Worth Thousands
Superannuation has sat at 12% since July 2025, paid on top of your wage. UK auto-enrolment wants 8% total, with only 3% from the employer. At £40,000, that’s £3,600 a year — earned over a 38-hour week.
The Two Economies Sell Different Things
Mining pays around A$3,174 a week, near £86,000 a year, dragging the average up. Britain leans on services, with the best money in London and the South East. Average UK pay lands between £28,000 and £35,000.
Tax Pulls in Opposite Directions
You keep the first £12,570, then hand over 20% to £50,270, 40% to £125,140 and 45% above. Thresholds are frozen, so rises drift into higher bands. From July 2026 Australians pay nothing on the first A$18,200, then 15% to A$45,000, 30% to A$135,000, 37% to A$190,000 and 45% beyond, plus a 2% Medicare levy.
The Cost-of-Living in Both Nations
Adjusted for purchasing power, both minimum wages buy the same basket, about $19 in international dollars. Groceries are up to 40% dearer, beef near A$21 a kilo, and a dozen eggs A$6.22.
A one-bed flat in Sydney averages A$2,500 a month against £1,800 in London, and a Sydney family spends A$6,194 before rent against £3,750. Adelaide is cheapest at A$4,180.
Electricity runs 14.01p per kWh against 19.31p here, petrol is £1.05 a litre, not £1.55, and a Melbourne coffee is A$5 against London’s £3.45. Water bills are level at A$1,152 and £634, though travel passes cost £88.89 there and £68.00 here.

The NHS Brain Drain
Medicine is where this stings most. The General Medical Council logged 2,770 medics requesting paperwork to work in Australia last year. British Medical Association figures from November 2024 put an England registrar on £50,832 and their Australian equivalent on £67,879, a 34% jump.
Dr Shivam Sharma of its resident doctors’ committee called that sad but hardly surprising, given £100,000 of student debt and pay a fifth lower than two decades ago.
The Nuffield Trust’s Kathryn Marszalek blames burnout, workloads, staff shortages and weak career progression as much as pay. It wants loan repayments capped at ten years and hopes the ten-year workforce plan will fix conditions.
How Many People are Moving to Down Under
Australian Bureau of Statistics figures show 40,000 people left the UK for Australia in 2024-25, up 26% on the pre-pandemic average. Working holidaymaker visas for 18- to 35-year-olds more than doubled, from 38,177 in 2022-23 to 79,412, according to Office for National Statistics figures.

Phoebe Stanley, a conveyancer from Northampton, moved to Melbourne in November 2024 and told The iPaper her work-life balance is far healthier. Her job doesn’t pay more, but cheaper living leaves her more spare cash, and weekends mean wineries and beaches. She isn’t coming home.
The Honest Verdict
Australia pays more in several key sectors, including healthcare, teaching, trades and mining, while its 12% superannuation contribution can further strengthen the overall employment package. Australian wages can offset some of the country’s higher living costs, but Australia is not universally cheaper than the UK.
